President Park Chung Hee of South Korea is assassinated by the head of the South Korean Central Intelligence Agency. 4 Nov. S. military presence in the Persian Gulf. 20 Nov. Several hundred armed Islamic extremists seize the Grand Mosque in Mecca. More than 150 people die when Saudi troops retake the mosque. 21 Nov. S. embassy in Islamabad. 3 Dec. Puerto Rican nationalists kill two American sailors outside the Sabana Seca naval communications center. On 9 December another attack occurs outside the Roosevelt Roads naval base.
Though the disco craze was propelled largely by black artists, it was intended for entertainment, not enlightenment. Women. With the growing strength of the women's movement, many black women artists found themselves straddling a fence in the 1970s. Some wanted to communicate a feminist message of independence and self-realization while still addressing the black experience. Black performers Phoebe Snow and Joan Armatrading became part of a growing group of women singers writing their own material in the 1970s, a group which also included Janis Ian, Carole King, and Carry Simon.
