Even today, when there are numerous examples of lCSs with extremely high instructional validity, it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of new hardware and to forget about the advantages and limitations of using computers (or any other instructional mode, including a live teacher) for instructional purposes. For those of us who tend to take computers for granted, it may be worthwhile to consider some of the capabilities of computers that provide strong advantages with regard to their use for instructional purposes.

Although technology may not be currently available to handle open-ended queries such as the latter one on-line, it may prove beneficial, depending on the level and maturity of the students with which one is working, to use such prompts either as a basis for discussion prior to actual use of the IeS or as a prompt which may be sufficient for eliciting the desired knowledge. This learning function is important even with less structured leSs such as microworlds, and careful consideration needs to be given to appropriate ways of initiating it.

An example of how important these non-cognitive factors can be is afforded by a study which indicates that interest can account for up to 30 times more variance in the recall of sentences than readability, a more traditional index of task difficulty [3]. , text anxiety). It seems likely that emotions can interfere with some cognitive processes while enhancing others, but so far there have been extremely few attempts to analyze the psychological mechanisms that produce such effects [54,55]. In this 28 regard, however, there is some evidence that anxiety interferes with the learning process by impairing the students' organization and retrieval processes [36].
